NOTICES

Importance of Lecture Notes
At the lecture on Friday 9/9 a significant number of students did not have the notes for lecture. I have already stated several times and several ways that the lectures are your BEST indication of what is important in this course and what will be covered on quizzes. MY PERSONAL WAY of ensuring that I learn the material in this course would be to work through the lecture notes, ensuring that I understand how the material on each slide is derived from basic physics or is derived mathematically from previous developments (previous slides). I would use the lectures to reach and improve this understanding; I would ADD my own notes to the lecture notes as the lecture proceeds. I would use the textbook, labs and discussions with the lecturer, TAs and fellow students to get further explanations for what I don't yet understand. YOUR PERSONAL WAY of ensuring that you learn the material may be different, and I respect that with the expectation, or course, that you do learn the material. You could, for example, focus on the textbook and use the lecture notes as a benchmark to ensure that you have covered all of the topics. (Note that a few topics are covered more thoroughly in the notes than in the textbook.) Whatever your approach, the purpose of this notice is encourage you to not overlook the importance of the lecture notes as a tool in your learning process. These decisions are yours; your challenge is to dedicate yourself sufficiently and consistently to learning the course material, taking advantage of the resources at your disposal. Regards, Prof. N. Duffie
